Inquiry About the Origin of "CAR" in VASP Input File Names.

#1 Post by hszhao.cn@gmail.com » Wed Oct 09, 2024 2:40 pm

Dear VASP Support Team,

I wonder about the naming convention of the input files used in VASP, specifically using CAR in filenames like INCAR, POSCAR, and POTCAR. I am curious about the historical or technical reasons behind this suffix. Could you please provide insight into how CAR became part of these file names?

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Best regards,
Zhao

Hi,

CAR is for Roberto Car, since VASP was originally a Car-Parrinello code for molecular dynamics simulation.
